I am mad. Mad as hell. I am sick of hearing the liberal media constantly blaming “capitalism” for the current economic woes in our country and for that matter the world. I am also sick of reading comments to the effect that China’s environmental travesties and human rights violations are a result of that communist country buying into “capitalism”. With all the negative assault being leveled at this thing called capitalism you would think it must be a dirty thing. In fact ask the typical freshman in college what they think of “capitalism” and more times than not you will get a negative reaction.
Why is this? Is this thing called capitalism really all that bad? Is it a necessary evil? Back to me being mad, I am mad that we are even having this conversation and that we even have to feel that this thing called capitalism needs to be defended. The problem is that liberals have used the word capitalism to describe the nefarious activities that we seem to see every day in the news. For example, Bernie Madoff and his scheme that robbed folks of their retirement, liberals point to as another example of capitalism. To liberals the crash of the Exxon Valdese is a classic example of unbridled “capitalism”. Halliburton, Goldman Sachs and on and on all these train wrecks are chalked up as none other than that evil thing we call capitalism.
I don’t know why liberal vocabularies are so limited as to find that all these examples of wrongdoing are nothing other than a single phenomenon that goes by the name “capitalism”. It could be that the words cheating, lying, greed, dishonestly, bribery, conflicted interest, stealing, envy and any of several other words to describe the stories above are not part of their vocabulary, or it could be that they have more sinister motivations. Motivations that stem from the fact that true capitalism, not the immorality they call capitalism is a threat to their power. Without fail, every time someone breaks the rules liberals seek to gain more control of those that obey the law by arguing that capitalism is the reason for the immoral activity.
It’s time for me to define capitalism. I am not going to waste time seeking out the definition from the writings of economist or any other intellectuals, the reason being, is that this would only play into the hands of liberals as they have spent the better part of the history of this great country trying to define capitalism as a sin, and surely their incessant indoctrination has found its way into the lexicon of even the most well intentioned expert on the subject of “capitalism”.
Capitalism to me is a much simpler proposition than the thing they try to sell us under the guise of “capitalism”. To me capitalism is quite simply; honest work, that creates something of value to others, which demands and justifies a profit as a result. Despite what you may have learned in college or through the media, this is what true capitalism it made of. Anything that does not fall within the confines on this simple definition is something else and should demand a different definition.
With this my new definition of capitalism, let me give you an example of true capitalism. My Grandma and Grandpa started their life together as eloped newlyweds without a penny to their name. They tell stories of a honeymoon in a borrowed car, a cheap hotel room and a few bucks for a romantic pizza dinner. From these humble beginnings they mopped, dusted, swept and scrubbed their way to their first million dollars. They have never stopped working and after years of hard toil and pain they have managed to create security for themselves and increased opportunity for later generations. In the community they live in there are countless buildings that have been cleaned, remodeled, built, bought or sold by my grandparents. During this time, they were constantly giving back to their community. Now they were tough business folks, they held up their end of a bargain and expected those they worked with to do the same. They were not ashamed to make a profit, it was their right, and they had worked for it while creating value in the community they lived in. Their success has continued despite the fact that our government is more and more determined to discourage this type of activity because capitalism, like the capitalism that my grandparents have participated in for years is a threat and must be curtailed by increased regulation and taxes on the profits generated by this kind of activity.
You see true capitalism is really self reliance and independence. Folks that practice capitalism are independent, they ask for no handouts, but demand the right to use and enjoy that which they have earned. This angers liberals; they are opposed to the idea of personal responsibility, because it threatens their power structure. They seethe when everything is not “equal”. Equality in the liberal dogma almost always seems to reward those that work less at the expense of those that work more, and those that work more do not need those that work less, the opposite is not the case. As a result, liberals have figured out that they can gain power by appealing to those that have less with promises of the spoils taken from those that have more. And by destroying the thing that creates folks that have more, capitalism, they will increase the number of those that have less and at the same time increase their power.
And so liberals continue their assault on capitalism. They know that if they can convince us that honest work that produces value and creates wealth is something bad they win. Unfortunately, they don’t stand a chance, because capitalism is, and always will be, on the right side of history.
